An elevator is any installation used to lift weights, persons or things. According to the legislation (Government Gazette 2604B/2008) all lifts must be inspected.
The new lifts are checked, in accordance with the provisions of the European Directive (2014/33/EU), before they start operating.
The existing (old) elevators must be checked / certified and adapted to the requirements that were in force in the year of their installation and to the additional requirements defined by the applicable national legislation.
All elevators must be recertified after a period of time, which varies according to the use of the elevator and the number of stops.

COMMENTS & CLARIFICATIONS
- The year of installation of the lift and the corresponding technical specifications are defined by the applicable legalizing document for the lift: operator’s certificate or operating license or registration deed or installation pre-approval or identification/marking of the main parts of the lift (e.g. drive mechanism). In the absence of the above, the year of installation will be documented from the year of issuance of the building permit of the building on which the elevator has been installed.
- The legislations BD (Government Gazette 408/A/07-12-1931), BD 127/1963 (Government Gazette 23/A/16-02-1963), BD 37/1965 (Government Gazette 10/A/17-1-1966), BD 890/1968 (Government Gazette 311/A/31-12-1968) have been repealed and are valid only as technical specifications.
- The technical safety improvement requirements of Annex III of the Public Safety Act Φ2/28425 (Government Gazette 2604B/2008) supplement the technical specifications that were in force at the time of installation of the lift with the limitations of article 15 “Transitional provisions”.
